What does single cylinder lock mean?
A single cylinder deadbolt is most common in homes, it means that you only need to use a key on the outside and there is typically a thumb turn to lock it from the inside.
What is a double cylinder lock and when should it be used?
A double cylinder deadbolt uses a key on both side of the door so not only do you lock and unlock it with a key on the outside, that is also how you lock and unlock the deadbolt on the inside. Most of the time these locks are used on doors that have glass inserts or when there are windows next to the door. This prevents a burglar from being able to break the glass, reach in and unlock your door.
Is there something stronger or better than a deadbolt to secure my door?
You can use a flip lock or door guardian. These devices are typically installed higher up on the door, have longer screws into the frame and take more force to kick open than a standard deadbolt.

Smart locks are very popular right now and why not, they can be swapped out with a standard deadbolt, they work with Schlage Home, Alexa, Hey Google, Ring and Leviton home automation systems. They come in various colors and designs to fit your decor. Available at Home Depot, Lowe’s and on Amazon.
Kwikset Smart Lock
The Kwikset SmartCode deabolt gives you the ability to lock your door with the touch of a button, customize user access codes up to 30 user codes for family and guests. You get a back-lit keypad as well as automatic door locking after 30 seconds; no more wondering if the door is locked. This keypad also installs in minutes without any need for wiring. This keypad works with Alexa, Google Assistant via Wink hub and Samsung SmartThings. Kwikset keypads can also be found at Home Depot, Lowe’s Ace Hardware as well as McCoy’s Building Supply.
Defiant Smart Lock
Among the name brands you know, there is one that you may not. Defiant is just as reliable as Kwikset and Schlage but at a lower price point. You get some of the same great features such as remote locking, bluetooth connectivity, digital keypad or a traditional key. Installation is easy to with no hardwiring required. You get 1 master code plus 10 user codes, low battery indicator, backlit keypad as well as vacation mode (user codes can be turned off as needed without deletion). You can find Defiant brand locks at your local Home Depot or on their website.
